The University of North Carolina Wilmington The University of North Carolina Wilmington is a coastal institution within the UNC system, located just five miles from the ocean in Wilmington, North Carolina. The university emphasizes a robust integration of research and community service in its educational approach, supported by a strong sustainability ethos led by the Office of Sustainability. This office, active for over 15 years, engages in both grassroots education and institutional infrastructure planning to create a culture of sustainability across campus.
The Challenge
UNCW struggled with pandemic-driven takeout waste, failed reusable plastics, and poor returns, worsening landfill and sustainability challenges.
Solution & Results
UNCW partnered with Transact + CBORD and USEFULL to launch a plastic-free reusable container program with accountability.
Looking Ahead
UNCW plans to expand USEFULL campuswide, integrating sustainability early and scaling impact across dining operations.
